I cannot believe that I’m writing about beer tasting and food pairing that happened over the Christmas Holidays. I rarely drink beer in the winter…it’s mostly a thirst quencher for me in the summer, but let me tell you, paired with the perfect appetizer or meal, I’m am now a winter beer convert. I was introduced to several varieties of Beau’s Beer, a few years ago, by my beer loving aficionado daughter. Beau’s is a locally brewed beer just outside Ottawa, in Vankleek Hill. They are certified organic , family operated business with a few awards under their belt. These guys are going places. In fact they will be distributing in New York State…so all of our south of the border readers, take note, there is some deliciousness coming your way soon.
Back to the beer tasting and pairing.
LUG TREAD… A nod to the classic beer of Cologne and my new favourite beer
BOG WATER….Hints of plum, malt, spice, earth.
TOM GREEN… Yes, our very own Canadian / comedian. This Beer is a milk stout, with hints of coffee and chocolate.
BEAVER RIVER…Citrus and pine notes , with fruit and caramel.
After we had tastings of the beer with appetizers, we agreed that some if not all would pair well with starters and certain main courses as well. We paired them with ….
- Fresh oysters on the half shell.
- Brisket and Raclette
- Homemade Turkey Soup
- Tortiere Pie
- Dark Chocolate
I’m now convinced that certain food, perhaps comfort food, deserve to be paired with Beau’s Beer. Do not take my word for it however. Beau’s is available at the LCBO, The Brewery in Vankleek Hill and online. Check out their website for more in depth details and descriptions of their beer at http://www.beaus.ca/
